About The Authors

Keith Nutter

Keith Nutter worked in the Shipyard from 1972 until 1990 as a Fitter and Turner, Draughtsman, Quality Assurance Engineer and Project Engineer.  Now working at Sellafield as a Quality Assurance Engineer, Keith has written eight previous books/booklets – all relating to the history of Barrow Raiders RLFC.  He is the club’s leading historian. Keith has been writing Rugby League books since 1981 when he published the first history of the Barrow club to be written since 1914.  Since then he has become established as one of Rugby League’s best known club-related writers, producing further club histories and player biographies.
His two most recent books, “Twin Towers” and “Images of Sport – Barrow Raiders” are still available, the latter being published by Tempest – the publishers of the forthcoming “Damned Un-English Machines”.

Jack Hool

Jack Hool worked in the Barrrow-in-Furness Shipyard for almost forty years.  Originally a Fitter and Turner, he progresses to the role of Quality Control Inspector.  He went on to work as a Quality Assurance Engineer before ultimately becoming a Quality Assurance Manager.
Now semi-retired (still occasionally undertaking consultancy work within the Shipyard) this will be Jack’s first published book though in the past he has written countless articles for both the local newspaper and various climbing magazines.

Jack and Keith have been working on “Damned Un-English Machines” for three-and-a-half years and the book is the culmination of an enormous amount of detailed research.  The book has been security cleared by both the Shipyard and the MoD and is unquestionably both the biggest Barrow-related history book ever published and also the most comprehensive available on the history of Barrow-built submarines.

With their wide experience of both the town and the Shipyard, Jack and Keith (both Barrow born and bred) are ideally suited to have written this book which is of local, national and, indeed, international importance.
